Tex-Mex Food – An American and Mexican Cuisine With History and Tradition

If you look up Tex-Mex food in the dictionary, you’ll find many different definitions. Some dictionary definitions say that Tex-Mex is Americanized Mexican food, or simply a type of Mexican food in Texas. In Texas, however, Tex-Mex means a large and specific part of Mexican food. If it is yellow cheese enchiladas with onion and chili sauce, then it is considered Tex-Mex food. If it’s fish tacos in San Francisco, then that’s not Tex-Mex food. It’s Mexican-American food, but not Tex-Mex.

Tex-Mex foods are generally considered a combination of Indian and Spanish cuisines, which came together to create a whole new cuisine, called Tex-Mex. For many years, Tex-Mex restaurant owners did not use that term at all. It was considered a slander and an insult, because the term Tex-Mex was taken to mean Americanized Mexican food. This insult cost Mexican-Texan families a good deal of business in the restaurant business for generations.

Tex-Mex was still called Mexican food when its popularity began to grow beyond the state lines of Texas to other parts of the country. Most people today agree that Tex-Mex food is not really Mexican food. Texan-Mexico restaurants have even begun to shed the negative connotations that surround this type of food. Some of the same Tex-Mex restaurants that hated the term even began to adopt it, claiming they invented Tex-Mex food.

Tex-Mex food has obviously earned its rightful place in food history. It has achieved worldwide popularity and forced us all to realize that it is the oldest regional cuisine in the United States.
