Salon First Aid: How To Keep Your Salon Staff Safe From Bloodborne Pathogens

What is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of first aid in salons? Two words: bloodborne pathogens (BBPs).

What exactly are bloodborne pathogens? They are viruses or diseases that can be transmitted through blood or other bodily fluids that can cause illness in people.

The three most common bloodborne pathogens are:

  1. Hepatitis B
  2. Hepatitis C
  3. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

Hepatitis B is the only one of the three that has a vaccine available and the other 2 are currently incurable. How can you better protect yourself in the BBP salon? These are the 3 main ways:

  1. Whenever you handle any infectious material, be sure to protect yourself with gloves and other protective equipment (safety glasses, gown, etc.).
  2. Properly sterilize all scissors, razors, and other cutting tools that may have come in contact with any infectious material.
  3. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after removing gloves after cleaning.

It is equally important to have a well-stocked first aid kit in the salon and that your staff are trained in how to use the kit items. OSHA requires annual bloodborne pathogens training for businesses that have the potential to come into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials. CPR classes are also recommended for businesses and are usually available on-site through many security companies. Some may bundle CPR classes, first aid certification, and bloodborne pathogens training into one session.

Follow the steps above to help keep your salon safe!
