MX Riding Boots: The second most important piece of protection for riding motocross

Second only to the motorcycle helmet, MX riding boots improve your overall riding experience by making you a safer rider. Other pieces of motocross riding gear such as chest protector, elbow pads, etc. they’re great, but their main purpose is to protect you in a fall or collision. I can’t count how many times my feet have slammed into rocks, stumps, and logs that didn’t lead to a crash but could have led to a foot injury if I hadn’t been wearing MX boots.

Foot pegs on a dirt bike can cause serious injury. The footpegs are basically a sharp, serrated piece of aluminum designed to provide an extremely slip-resistant surface. This tapered foot peg, paired with a good pair of MX riding boots, will make you feel truly connected to the bike and take your riding to the next level.

However, if you’ve ever tried to get a dirt bike going in a regular pair of work boots, you’re well aware of how close your calf is to the footpeg. I know a girl who got a nasty scar from trying to start a dirt bike. She literally took a gouge out of her calf. Now, she has motocross boots.

Another common injury people get when riding without MX boots is a shin splint. His foot could come off the footrest and collide with him, breaking his tibia. You could also scrape the skin on your shin as your leg slides down on the serrated peg.

There is no chance of this type of injury when riding in motocross boots.

When you drive through the northeast you will find a lot of mud. Ranging in size from a swimming pool to a small lake, mud puddles can be a daunting obstacle to navigate. Many motocross boots extend to just below the knee and are usually waterproof or rugged. MX riding boots make riding in the mud fun and help keep your feet dry.

The benefits of wearing motocross boots

  • Protection for feet, shins and calf area against footrest-related injuries
  • Protection for the lower part of the legs against rocks, trees and other wrinkles.
  • A better connection with the bike.
  • A greater sense of security and increases your confidence
  • They make riding in the mud fun.
  • They look like something Gene Simons would wear on stage with KISS.

I personally wear a pair of motocross boots made by Moose Riding Equipment (M1 Boot). I really like them because they seem to extend further up the leg than most other motocross boots, plus the toe area of the boot is a tough, rigid plastic. My feet would have been crushed multiple times without it. The shin area also contains pieces of hard plastic. My friends have mx boots made by Thor. They look great and are very comfortable; they just don’t seem as robust as the M1. Cost was also a factor for me. I only had $100 to make this purchase. Prices range from $100 to $500. I’m sure the higher end boots would be better than the less expensive ones. The point is, if you’re going to ride, protect your feet. An x-ray at the doctor’s office will cost more than $100.
