Mistakes in Article Writing: 7 to Avoid

Making your articles available for reprints by other ezine publishers and webmasters is the fundamental strategy in creating a flood of pre-qualified visitors to your website.

If you want your articles to be collected and massively distributed by others, here are 7 common mistakes to avoid:

Article Mistake # 1 Too many grammar, spelling and punctuation errors.

In addition to having your article reviewed by others, you may also want to make sure you have clearly defined paragraphs. Nothing is worse than a large amount of text with 20 sentences in a row.

Readers no longer read articles in depth and often just “scan” your article. They want little bits of information that can be easily digested … also known as “snack information.”

Keep your “voice” on the same person throughout the article. If you are using the first person voice (me, me) or the second person (you, us, us) or the third person (they, they, he, she) … be consistent and stay in one voice throughout time. Article.

Article Mistake # 2 Too much hype, bragging, and self-promotion.

If it’s as good as you know it to be, there’s no reason to fill the body of the article with hype, free links to your site, or blatant self-promotion. Readers are smart and will see through your “veil of advertising.”

It is best to sell or present your business only in the RESOURCE BOX below the body of the article. Research I’ve done indicates that the resource box often gets a CTR (click through rate) of 3%. Make sure to take advantage of that by not selling too much in the body of the article.

Article Mistake # 3 Content based on what you need to learn, not what your reader needs.

Put yourself in the shoes of your reader and ask yourself: “What does this article offer me?” Research what your reader wants to read by doing surveys with your own audience or doing keyword search engine research to find what people are searching for.

Article Mistake # 4 Make your article broad or superficial in content.

It is better to delve into a narrow topic. Define it. Explain it. Relate to that. Use bullets or numbered lists. Offer a secret or experience you have on the subject. Be original by covering your topic as narrowly as possible in a way that has not been done by others. Brevity is gold.

Article Mistake # 5 The title and abstract of the article do not catch the attention of the readers.

The headline is often ~ 95% of the initial reason someone might read your article or move on to another article. Don’t bore your audience with a boring headline or worse, a boring article introduction.

If you have to use two sentences to make your headline, you are overthinking. Keep it simple and short. Use keyword research tools to optimize your article title.

Error in article n. 6 Plagiarism or ‘purchase of items’ …

It’s okay to search for article ideas on the Internet, but it’s not okay to copy word for word from any article. Paraphrase can also be classified as plagiarism. Be original. Let the words flow from your mind to your article. You will sleep better at night and your items will have a higher market value.

Buying items isn’t a great idea … especially if you don’t get an exclusive license to use them. What good is the same item if thousands of people call it their own? If you outsource your article writing to ghostwriters, make sure you have an exclusive right or license to the works.

Item No. 7 Do not burn the RESOURCE BOX by overcharging it.

The RESOURCE BOX is your reward for submitting your article for free reprints, but don’t abuse the welcome mat by including a dozen website addresses. Stick with a website URL or two at the most and you will find that your article may find a higher syndication rate.

If you want to be really vulgar, include an affiliate link in the RESOURCE BOX. A better strategy is to have a domain name registered for each affiliate program you submit and include the domain name that is rewritten or updated in your affiliate link. This is much less vulgar and looks more professional.
