Materials to choose for your new kitchen

modern kitchen cabinet materials

Choosing the right materials for your kitchen cabinets is an integral part of making a kitchen within budget and design concepts. This article outlines some of the top and best material choices used in making kitchen cabinets and built-in wardrobes.

melamine boards

Melamine is a board made of compressed wood chips with a thin protective layer of PVC and has PVC edges of different thicknesses to match the color of the board. Melamine comes in a variety of stylish colors and many stunning wood imitations.

Using melamine board to build cabinets is a cost-effective solution and will give you a nice and uncluttered modern looking finish. Due to these two important factors, the popularity of melamines has grown tremendously over the years.

These boards are cut to size with table saws from a ready cut list, making them relatively quick and easy to assemble.

The only real downside to this material is that melamine tabletops are subject to possible swelling with prolonged exposure to water. This only happens if water finds its way between the joints of the protective PVC liner, if this happens the particle board underneath can swell.

Doors and Panels Duco Spray Supawood

Duco Supawood doors are manufactured by pre-treating flat or molded supawood panels. After that, they are put through a spray painting process with enamel paint. At the end of the process, a high-quality matte, medium-gloss or high-gloss finish is obtained.

These tabletops are available in almost every color imaginable, making them very popular for use in kitchen creation and all other BICs. A duco sprayed finish would be more aptly described as lustrous and elegant.

PVC wrapped doors and panels

PVC wrapped doors and panels are achieved by wrapping and gluing PVC sheets onto supawood particle board. PVC sheet can be wrapped around doors and raised panel slots.

These panels and doors are durable, seamless and waterproof. They are also offered in a wide range of colors and faux wood grain, making PVC wrapped cabinets a very attractive and popular option for most built-in cabinetry needs.

veneered boards

Wood veneer is a thin layer of wood glued to a particle board to create a realistic impression of solid wood.

Veneers are available in a wide range of hardwoods. These veneers can be stained, varnished or polished. Veneered wood is not normally duco sprayed or painted as this would detract from the natural beauty of the veneers.

solid pine

Solid pine is one of the few solid woods used in the manufacture of kitchen cabinets. The reason is that it is reasonably priced compared to solid hardwoods.

Pine is more durable than particle board and can handle wet conditions longer than particle board and can be sprayed, stained or duco stained.

Bamboo

Bamboo has recently become popular in kitchen manufacturing because it is a material with a low carbon footprint.

Bamboo is very durable and is considered a hardwood when laminated. It can be duco-projected, varnished or stained for a wide range of finishes and different colours.

Glass

Glass is most commonly used as panels in display cabinet doors.

Although sandblasted and clear glass is most commonly used when it comes to kitchen paneling, there is a wide range of colors and textures available that could be used to create a very attractive feature point.
