Gibraltar City Center – What to see

There is much more to Gibraltar than just shopping on Main Street. Once you’ve shopped for your duty free items, you’ll be amazed at how many interesting sites central Gibraltar has to offer. The information below is ordered as you enter the city from Casemates Square. Follow the sites in the order you read them for an interesting tour of the city center.

Casemate Square

This square was once the site of public executions on the Rock, and remains a focal point of Gibraltarian life today, but thankfully in a more positive way: it is here that many major events take place that draw crowds, for example. vintage car and motorcycle shows, National Day celebrations and the like. Casemates Square is also a tourist hub, packed with numerous bars and restaurants, many of which occupy premises in their former barracks to the north of the square. Casemates is also home to the famous Gibraltar glass factory and a fine arts centre, among the points of interest.

Definitely worth a visit, the factory allows you to see highly skilled glassblowers in action, creating hand-cast glass work. In an adjoining room you can buy his work, from bowls, vases and glasses to key rings and jewelry.

Take a walk along Line Wall Road, parallel to Irish Town, and you’ll find the prominent golden arch built into the original main city wall in 1932. It commemorates the achievements and camaraderie of the US Navy and Royal Navy during the First World War.

King’s Bastion Leisure Center

Once a defense center during the Great Siege, King’s Bastion was later the site of The Rock’s electricity generation center. It later became a world-class entertainment center with bowling alleys, restaurants, gaming machines, an ice-skating rink and a multiplex cinema. Interestingly, the building retains many of its original features, incorporating them with state-of-the-art architectural designs.

Gibraltar Museum

This centrally located museum offers an excellent audiovisual presentation and displays of original Gibraltar artifacts, particularly old photographs and prints. Covers the cultural and natural history of Gibraltar with a focus on the military history of the Rock. The lower part of the building houses one of the best preserved Muslim baths in Europe.

John Mackintosh Hall

This is a center for many of Gibraltar’s cultural activities and also contains a public library and tourist office. The theater and conference room are used for public performances and exhibitions.

Trafalgar Cemetery

This cemetery contains the remains of the soldiers who died in the Battle of Trafalgar. Every year a ceremony is held to commemorate Lord Nelson’s victory. From here you can take a tourist taxi to the Upper Rock and the famous Apes’ Den.
