Everything you need to know about pool tables

Signal sports are challenging, interesting and addictive. Like activities that require us to use hand-eye coordination and strategy, they remain one of the most popular sports ever invented.

There are several categories of reference sports, with pool, billiards and snooker being the best examples. Although they all share basic similarities, such as the use of balls and tables, they also have clear differences. In the pool, six pockets, table dimensions ranging from 7 feet to 9 feet, and a bed that must be made of slate no less than one inch thick (by WPA standards) are the key features.

Pool table prices range from a few hundred dollars to over $5,000 and up. It is widely accepted that the more expensive the table, the better the player’s performance. However, price alone is not the deciding factor and there are several attributes to consider.

bed materials

A pool table bed can be made of three materials: slate, wood slate, and slate core. Slate, as we know, is solid rock. High-end tables always use it. It does not warp even after years of use and is extremely level. However, a lot depends on the experience of the fabricators and the installer, as even expensive slate can perform sub-par if not properly fabricated or laid.

With wooden slate, the tables are light and easily deformed. It’s a no-no for professional play and should only be considered for use by children. You’ll get one for as low as $500, so when you equate the price with the quality, you can imagine how long it’ll last.

The slate core, meanwhile, is a combination of concrete and wood. It’s not as flimsy as the wooden board, but it’s nowhere near what the board offers. Since it’s not heavy, you’ll notice it warping after a year or two of use as it’s weighed down by the rails on the edges of the table. The level of the surface will be compromised and you will not be able to keep the balls centered.

clothes

While slate is the best bedding material, worsted wool provides the perfect covering. Ensures a hard, smooth surface with no naps for superior gaming. There are lower-quality cloths (those with 60 percent wool) that work great, too, and you don’t need to buy a worsted-wool tabletop if you plan to use it for casual gaming. Steer clear of cheap felt though, as it can’t take the abuse of more than a few games. Choose it only if you are buying a table for the children.

Tracks

The rails of a pool table need to be strong and heavy because they need to support your weight and influence the bounce of the ball. Solid wood is the perfect choice and is also uniquely beautiful with its fine grained patterns. However, it can be expensive, so only consider it if the table is going to be used for everyday or professional gaming.

Hardboard or engineered wood is another option. It’s not as heavy or dense as solid wood, but it will do for casual playing. Please note that it tends to warp and weaken if the table cloth is replaced repeatedly. This is true even if the bed of the table is made of slate and the cloth of worsted.
