Dork or Diva? What not to wear to your next job interview

This is the big day. Are you ready for the big moment? We are in prime time with the interview that you have worked so hard to get. You’ve done all your homework at the company. You’ve practiced answering all those important questions. You feel good and think ready to go. But you are? Have you covered all the bases? What about the grooming aspects of the job search?

Do you know what turns off potential interviewers? I know some of these things may seem obvious to some of you, but… . . dah Little things add up too.

I’m sure your mother and teachers told you that neatness counts, but that other physical characteristics could influence the decision for or against you. Besides the obvious: clean body, hair, and nails, plan an appropriate wardrobe, and accessorize appropriately.

How do you see the part?

o Carry a briefcase, folder, briefcase or whatever you use to store your important papers. Scratch the backpack, fanny pack or any other unprofessional luggage rack. They don’t conform to the law.

o Remove body piercings and cover any visible tattoos.

o Forget miniskirts, microskirts, t-shirts and other unprofessional attire.

o Wear the right shoes. No flip flops or super high heels.

o If you are wearing a new suit, try it on first. There’s nothing worse than fidgeting trying to focus while someone else fidgets in clothes that don’t fit well or are uncomfortable. Make sure to remove all labels.

o Eliminate distracting fashion statements such as overly long, embellished nails and exotic hairstyles.

o Lower the tone of the perfume or cologne.

o Wear subtle makeup, not extravagant; save it for the new job celebration.

Plan ahead: Think about what you look at when you see someone dressed garishly or with extravagant makeup and hair. That’s what you want to avoid for a job interview. You want the interviewer to focus on you and what you have to say, not what you are wearing or how you look.
So when you go to prime time for the big job interview, don’t be a jerk or a diva. Dress accordingly and present yourself as a professional job seeker.
