Display of your wooden ship model

At our model ship company, we believe that after spending 300 hours building a model ship, the model itself should be the star of the show and the display material used should take a backseat, unless it is shown on a diorama like a dry dock. .

The display base can be made of wood or acrylic. If you choose wood, it should be a solid piece of real wood rather than MDF that is well routed but not ornate and finished with a dull gloss. Another option would be a clear acrylic block.

Mounting the model on the display base can be done in a number of ways. Our company does not believe in invading the keel and hull of a model ship with a screw or bolt.

Non-evasive viewing supports can be cradles, stands, or magnets.

Cribs can be made of wood, acrylic, or wire trusses. The cradle design should be as minimal as possible and placed as low on the hull as possible.

Brackets can be made of clear acrylic rod, flexible wire, or wooden dowels.

For clear acrylic rods, the end that touches the hull should be mitered. Display stands to present your artwork without drilling through the keel of the ship model. We have developed this product so that it does not compromise your model or take away your ship model when someone is admiring it. The product is mitered, paintable and can be glued to the base if required.

Rare earth magnets are interesting and are used as much as possible in museum exhibits. Installing an appropriately sized SmCo or NdFeB magnet on the ship model’s hull and inserting one into the wooden base will hold the model in place. Once the magnet has been inserted and epoxy applied to the wooden base, a thin layer of wood can be glued over it to make it disappear.

Of course, if you don’t mind drilling a hole in the keel of your model ship, there are several types of pedestals you can use. A wood or turned brass grooved bass is the most common. If you use this type of pedestal, they should be of different heights to give your model a more realistic setup.

As with many variables when building a ship model, before you start the build you need to determine how you will display it so that the method you use can be incorporated into the build as you go.
