6 Important Reasons Why Infrastructure Matters!

How many times have we witnessed that the candidates articulate a message, supporting the improvement of our infrastructure, but, when elected, nothing important and/or significant happens? The reality is that much of this nation, especially older and inner-city locations, is experiencing ever-deteriorating infrastructure. This is another example of political procrastination, where many public officials continually refuse to make significant and relevant decisions, but rather postpone, until tomorrow, things that they probably should have done yesterday. Things that could be considered and improved, for a variety of reasons, include: bridges, tunnels, roads; mass transit; pipelines; electrical network; quality public internet access; and real, sustainability, especially with regard to air and water quality, etc. With that in mind, this article will briefly try to consider, examine, review and discuss these 6 areas, and assess what they mean and represent.

1. bridges; tunnels; roads: Many of America’s bridges and tunnels are aging and deteriorating, and must be addressed, sooner rather than later, if we are to avert potential tragedy! Some of the most used bridges are more than 50 years old and several are more than a century old! The majority has not been upheld as effectively, completely, and consistently as it should, often because politicians focus on popular issues! Our road maintenance is undoubtedly less than stellar, and the design of many of our roads, highways, etc., are outdated at best and potentially dangerous!

two. Mass transit: Why do trains, in many other parts of the world, move passengers, many times more quickly and efficiently than in this nation? In this nation, our mass transportation systems are either aging, deteriorating, in need of renovation/overhaul, or no longer sufficiently capable of handling the current needs of the particular area. Compare this to what we often see in other parts of the world!

3. Pipelines: Because many areas created their water systems years ago, there are thousands of miles of water pipes that are made of lead! Since we have learned of the dangers related to this and that public health must require, we replace them with safer ones!

Four. Electrical network: Why, after almost every significant storm, do many areas lose power? Why are we still so dependent on fossil fuels, when so many others have been modernized for years, taking advantage of windmills and other natural resources? Shouldn’t power cables no longer be above ground and placed, much less in areas subject to severe weather conditions?

5. Quality Public Internet Access: There are too many places where public Internet access, especially quality conditions, etc., is severely limited! If other places can update and improve quality public Internet access, why can’t we?

6. Sustainability/ environment/ air and water quality: Isn’t it the responsibility of this generation to deliver a planet with clean air and water, and quality environmental conditions? We must demand that our public leaders prioritize, sustain, and address significant infrastructure improvements!

We need strategically planned, focused addressing of our infrastructure, sooner rather than later! We cannot continue postponing these essential efforts due to false priorities, political/personal agendas, and/or self-interest!
