3 tricks to decorate the space of a small bathroom

The bathroom can be the most difficult room in a home to decorate simply because it is often the smallest room in the house, especially in older homes. But the bathroom is a high-traffic area and requires a large amount of storage space, so learning how to accommodate the small size of the bathroom and still make it functional is a crucial skill for any home decorator. This article is about function, not form. We won’t be discussing color schemes, decor, or fancy accessories, just the practical side of creating space where space is limited.

1.) Say no to the pedestal

Pedestal sinks are very popular today. People love its simple and understated look. But for the small bathroom owner, pedestal sinks eliminate one of your key storage items. If you’re starting from scratch or planning a renovation, consider a traditional powder room. These under sink cabinets are perfect for storing items like cleaners, brushes, or other bulky items. It also keeps them out of the way so if you use shelves, you’re not staring at an unsightly jug of bleach or a pack of oversized replacement heads for your electronic toothbrush.

2.) Even small rooms have wall space

If you’re frustrated that there’s nowhere to put things that absolutely have to go in the bathroom, look at the walls. All bathrooms have at least some unused wall space. This should be devoted to shelving when storage is at a minimum. Sometimes this means a double row of tight little selves by the bathroom mirror. (There are also vanity cabinets designed for this area that work great when trying to squeeze in more space.) In other circumstances, you can put a triple row of long shelves along the entire length of an unused wall. Either way, adding shelves to the wall—a simple task that requires no technical expertise—is an easy way to increase storage space in your small bathroom.

3.) Think outside the sink

Sometimes you have to leave the room to see all your options. It may be a narrow bathroom with a sink on one side and a toilet and tub/shower on the other side. So when you walk into the room, there is barely enough space for one person to stand, leave room for cosmetics, toiletries, towels and cleaning supplies. But if you take a step back for a minute, you may realize that before you get to the sink, there is an open space. Many times, a small, narrow vanity will fit next to the sink. This provides plenty of storage space, as well as good counter space. Decorate or paint the dresser to match your bathroom décor, and storage woes are over.
