The best place to keep your money and valuables is in the bank. But for those items you want to keep in your house, there are some hiding places that even experienced thieves won’t search.

Keep in mind that when a burglar breaks into your home, they have two goals: (1) obtain money or valuables Y (2) get out fast. That means he’s going to search your house until he finds something or until he feels his time is up, usually 10-15 minutes.

hiding places to avoid

Some of the so-called big caches are so used that even criminals know about them. You’ll want to avoid hiding valuables in the following places:

  • freezer
  • refrigerator
  • toilet tank
  • anywhere in your bed
  • cereal boxes
  • under the cat litter

These are some of the places where thieves will go first. They will also search your closet and dresser drawers.

best hiding places

However, you can outwit the crooks if you get creative and put in a little effort. Here are some smart ways to protect your valuables:

  • Your child’s room: Because children’s rooms are often full of toys and junk, burglars don’t spend much time there. When they walk into your child’s room, they look for specific, easy-to-spot items like game consoles. Try hiding your valuables inside a stuffed animal or other toy that is rarely played with.
  • Inside a book: Pick a book from your bookshelf that you’ve never read and cut a hole inside along the pages. Put glue in the hole so it holds its shape and put your valuables inside. Alternatively, you can choose multiple books, cut out the middle, and then glue them together. When placed on your bookshelf, they will create an empty space inside where you can hide things.
  • Fake electrical outlets: Purchase a deep outlet box at a hardware store. Drill a hole in the wall, put the outlet box inside, put your valuables in the box and cover it with an electrical outlet cover.
  • Air conditioning outlets: Since these are usually screwed in, it’s unlikely a thief would take the time to remove vents from your entire home looking for money.
  • Under your rug: Wall-to-wall rugs are a great place to hide money. Remove some of the rug, put your money under the rug or pad, and smooth the rug back.
  • throw pillows: It is relatively easy to open and re-sew part of a seam section on a decorative pillow. This gives you access to the inside of the pillow to store valuables.
  • Toothpaste tube: Cut off the flat end of an empty toothpaste tube. Put your valuables inside and then roll the flat end up a couple of times. This gives the appearance of a partially used tube of toothpaste.

Once again, the best place to store your valuables is the bank. But there are many hiding places to outsmart thieves. Look around you to find other creative areas in your home.
