Learn how to build a bed frame

A bed is an absolute necessity in the home, since without it it will be impossible for you to get a good night’s rest. However, today’s most important sleeping item is littered with unnecessary extras that can drastically increase its price. For those looking for a simpler but practical and inexpensive alternative, they can build their own frame.

The first stage of the construction process is the planning stage. This is where you should look for bed construction plans that can be downloaded online for free, before purchasing the necessary materials. However, you must first decide what type of sleeping structure you would like to build. There are several types available such as the traditional platform or the folding Murphy. Once you have decided on the type of frame, you will need to decide the type of wood you would like to work with. Softwoods like southern yellow pine are the cheapest and easiest to work with, while birch is slightly more expensive and more difficult. Hardwoods like maple or oak, on the other hand, are the most expensive and difficult to work with.

The second stage combines the processes of cutting, sanding and staining the wood. If you are having trouble cutting the wood, you can buy pre-cut ones from the supplier or ask a carpenter to cut them into the pieces needed for you. To sand the wood, remember to use both a good sander and safety equipment, such as goggles. It is also best to sand along the grain of the wood, rather than against it, to avoid uneven sanding. The next process, staining, is determined by the type of wood you use. Softwoods have uneven or stained patches, so use of a wood conditioner prior to staining to achieve an even stain. However, hardwoods have a fairly smooth surface.

The third and final stage involves the assembly of the general framework. This means that you will have to put together the bed frame as well as the footrests and the headboard. Before you begin to assemble, spread out all pieces of wood, screws, nails, and other materials to facilitate the installation process. Make sure you follow the plan closely and familiarize yourself with all the necessary parts. Once you have finished assembling all the materials, check that the frame was assembled correctly by placing a little weight on top.

Building your own frame will save you money and still give you the same practicality and usability that store-bought sleeping frames offer.
